<title> Tractors and winter
<subhead> If you have recently bought your first new or used tractor you may not have yet had experience of how much your tractor hates the winter. Many farmers who need a working tractor during the winter months are frustrated by the problems they have getting their tractor to start and those who don’t need the tractor during the winter find they have problems when they resurrect it in the spring. So, how do you prevent those tricky winter tractor problems?
Your tractor shouldn’t really be blamed for all your winter woe; after all it is just behaving like most engines do during the winter. Engines, particularly those which are neglected, don’t respond well to the cold but there are a few tips which if you can take onboard might just help you to avoid some of your seasonal frustrations.
If you are not going to use your tractor then put it to bed properly. This means find it a nice, warm place, empty it of all petrol/diesel, drain the carburettor and put it on stable blocks
Disconnect the battery and store it in a warm, safe place, not in the house and away from any risk of flames and heat
If you are going to use your tractor during winter months then you should remember that the conditions in which you are working will be different to those during the summer. All the usual ground problems you need to watch out for, such as steep slopes and ditches, will require even more care due to ice, frost and snow. You will need to allow more time for braking whilst driving your tractor as you may find that the brakes are affected by the cold. In fact, you will need to allow more time for everything you do during the winter as work is often considerably slower.
