Although we supply used tractors to many customers up and down the country, JR Firby is actually located 14 miles north of York, the birthplace The Great Yorkshire Show. The show, which first began in 1838 in York, is now one of the biggest agricultural events in the country and the attendance figures for 2005 of 134,810 visitors suggest that the show is set to continue growing.

The Great Yorkshire Show first began in 1838 and was based on the vision of HS Thompson who was the heir to a 15,000 acre estate in the East Riding at Kirby Hall. He was extremely keen on agriculture and it was in 1837 that he first had the brainwave of setting up a Yorkshire Agricultural Society, which could move from place to place. The Society was established in the October and an annual show to promote agriculture also sprung to life. The show was hosted by thirty towns over the years until it eventually found its home in Harrogate in 1949, where it received a purpose-built showground and it has stayed ever since.

Now the show prides itself on its ability to be able to accommodate any agriculture enthusiast, from sheep to tractor lovers. Over the course of the three day show there truly is a little of something for everyone and although the old favourites can always be found, there is also always something new and refreshing every year. There are literally thousands of animals entered into competitions and there are also marching bands, polo demonstrations and tractors galore!
